Corporate VPN

Well I have nothing against a company establishing Internet use policies but not being able to access my blog from either the office, home, or on the road when using the VPN, which is the bulk of the time, makes keeping a blog current very difficult.

Now when the CEO of a major public company like Sun Microsystems, Johnathan Schwartz, has a personal company blog that he updates VERY frequently it would be nice to have either a company sponsored blog site or at the very least ability to access a suitable third-party provider live Windows Live.

So much for my rant.

Stay tuned for some environmental news. My patent to integrate alternative energy into data centers has been sumitted to the US Patent Office and I look foward to working with our engineering team and select customers to validate the concepts.

I'm BACK

So our corporate VPN has stopped all access to this and several other sites. Probably not a bad move. So from now on any posts will most likely take place while I am on the road or at home on my local network.

In Columbus, Ohio for a few days this week, next, and the one after then hope to stay closer to home for a while as Brigitte will be back for spring break.

Brazil creates protected areas in Amazon - World Environment - MSNBC.com

YAY! Now this is what one calls ACTION! A bold move by the people of Brazil to protect one of the last great ecological resources in the world.

If we can get Southeast Asia to follow suit we may have a chance yet in savings this precious home we call Earth.

A little reforestation wouldn't hurt either. Based upon the carbon cycle CO2 records show we should continue to work towards saving and especially replanting forest in the Southern Hemisphere as the Northern Hemisphere is taking on the lion's share of CO2 absorption.

So if you are considering donating to a tree planting or forest conservation organization try to earmark your funds for the Southern Hemisphere. And plant a tree in your own backyard at the same time.

My son and I plant or seed at least a dozen trees in the surrounding countryside every year.

On Sun's David Douglas and The Long Green Tail

David Douglas's recent blog post on the Long Green Tail - see track back or http://blogs.sun.com/enviro/entry/the_long_green_tail for more information was timely and interesting. Certainly with the holiday season starting to impact most consumers' finances it is difficult to think of "BIG" global shifting practices, purchases, or changes as they are too hard to fit into our daily practice.

Yet something as simple as changing out a few traditional incandescent light bulbs for compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) would be easy and not exactly budget busting for most consumers. With CFLs now selling in 4 and 6 packs for around $10.95 at the likes of Home Dept http://www.homedepot.com, Costco http://www.costco.com, and Lowes http://www.lowes.com one has to ask - Why not?

Well the CEC, California Energy Commission, http://www.energy.ca.gov/, has asked the same thing as recent studies on their part indicate a general market acceptance rate of 2%. That's right - TWO PERCENT. Oh sure the number of homes using at least one has grown to 56% but one is not enough when most homes have anywhere from 6 to 10 incandescent lights running at one time and a good 20 to thirty lights when the entire house is taken into consideration. See http://energy.ca.gov/releases/2006_releases/2006-10-4_chg_light_chg_world.html

So let's take the initiative and start changing out light bulbs for CFLs. It’s simple, easy, and at $10.95 for 4 to 6 CFLs not at all expensive. Now is the time as our daylight hours continue to shrink we can gain the most economic benefit by switching to CFLs in the Winter when we use our lights the most.

Four or six CFLs across twenty to thirty million households in the US would provide staggering environmental, social, and economic benefits that though small at the individual level are greater than any Federal or State investment in a one-time energy act.

I've installed over ten CFLs this year with another six targeted for 2007. Join me and do your part to shorten the tail.

Toyota beats Ford for 2nd straight month - Automotive - MSNBC.com

Ford, my heart goes out to all of your direct employees and those of your suppliers who are suffering because you forgot the basics of how to run a business. 1. Understand your customer 2. Understand your competitors 3. Understand your field of play 4. Understand the global, social, political, and economic issues of the day and the foreseeable next five years 5. Deliver a product or service of recognized quality and value that meets or exceeds your customer's perceived needs.

You missed the mark. Trucks, especially gas guzzling GHG spewing monsters are not what the market demands. Sure, there are places around the globe were a "basic" work truck, note the words BASIC, are required. But then hoisting them on the public to run daily errands, go shopping, and run little Bobby and Suzy to school and soccer practice is not in keeping with items 1-4 above.

Want to regain the public's trust? Let's see some top-level executives come out and state they missed the boat. They blew it on items 1-4 and even 5 above and are stepping down, as in leaving the company. Let them express some genuine sorrow at the pain and suffering they are causing the investor community, EMPLOYEES and SUPPLIERS, as well as the public at large.

Then convene an ad-hoc panel of public advisors including academia, industry, volume and individual users, and government to help advise future product and service development.

But not without first tossing out an industry challenge, one that is achievable with current technology and manufacturing practices, that Ford will achieve a North American CAFE of 30 MPG by 2010 including trucks under 10,000 lbs GVW and 40 mpg for all vehicles under 5,000 lbs GVW. In addition, Ford will achieve a corporate wide 20% reduction in GHG emissions from continuing operations by 2015 with year-on-year results to be reported each July 1 and audited by an independent agency approved by the Union of Concerned Scientist.

Call me if you would like some help.

Here is hoping you find the recipe again and start on a path back to your former greatness. America and the World need a visionary transportation manufacture.

With best regards.
